What we've learned in 20 years is that the only difference between ice cream and custard or savory vegetable accompanying dinner and dessert is our mindset.
We've been fortunate that most of the restaurants and bars we frequent work with us to minimize any kind of issues. If we forget something when we order from the menu, the wait staff usually prompt us into thinking about what we just ordered so corrections can be made. In talking with the restaurant personnel we've found that we are not the only ones. There seems to be more and more patrons with food allergies and intolerance.
